A Language Deprived

There are many languages in the world Language is a means of communication; it also expresses and explains once identity. In the essay if Black English isn’t a language, then tell me, what it is? By James Baldwin expresses his feeling about the about Black English in America. He believes that Black English is not a dialect it is a language that Blacks posses and describes it as their identity.
There are many debates to whether Black English is a dialect or a pure new language it is difficult to say but using the definition of language and since it has not been accepted as an English language we can call it a language of its own. This language considered as one of the identity in the Black communities since the time of slavery to the 21 century. In my opinion I agree with James Baldwin since it is a way that Black people has been communicating with it and as far as I know it is being spoken only by the black community for this reason it is my opinion that there is no doubt that it is a language not a dialect. I think there should not be any argument to if it is a language or not, people should see and accept the fact that it is a way of communicating and identity.
It is so ironic that there is such a big deal made out of it just to accept it as a language. I am from Ethioipa there are 80 diffrent languages and they have all been accepted as a lunguage and we have Amhatic, which is the common language. I dont see why that can be implemented in this setuation that is just my opinion.

Meaning of independence for Blacks

In the essay the meaning of July forth for the Negro by Fredric Douglas is a definition essay that gives another meaning for July. He gives July forth which is associated for the freedom of the united States from the British a negative meaning connotation by seeing it through the eyes of the black slaves in the country. Douglas describes how much the United States was against the foreign slave trade yet they perform internal –slave trade inside the country.
He shows as all the details of how these slaves suffered weather they are getting transported to a different state, the beating and the suffering they endured during their journey and also how they were getting soled as a commodity in the market. After stating this he goes on to talk about how America is celebrating Independence and preaching against foreign trade yet through the eyes of the slaves they don’t make any sense.
Personally blacks at that period may have felt that way due to all the hard ship they suffered. But I don’t think that is the feeling they have about the American independence.

Confused Identity

Inter racial marriages are a major trend in a United States. With that comes the birth of mixed children Asian American, Latino American etc. Many of these children are left to wonder which race to pick. They are also having trouble getting accepted from their own race which is very ironic. Many mixed race people don’t like to accept only one side of their family but here in America they are left to pick one and in most cases this creates a conflict between oneself and the side of the race he or she picked because it is considered as a sign of desertion.
Left to wonder which race to pick many fail to truly understand what it means to biracial. Personally I feel that there is no need to pick a particular race because there is no reason why a person should be seen or classified by his or her race instead of the rich multiculturalism they present to the world. It is my opinion that there is so much hate between people because choosing race leads to favoritism and latter perspire into war between many race.

Fear of the Darkness or my race?

It is very surprising how much power a black man posses when night falls. Whether he has a built physic or a non treating look he seems to have the power of scaring others without even mentioning a word. People seems to always seem to walk faster, hide to their purse some even may ran to where there is a little light or to a more crowded streets. Brent Staples describes some of the tensions people experience when they see a black man walking besides them.
It is extra ordinary to see the people’s reaction to a black person. I myself have a firsthand experience were getting scared of me; specially considering the fact that I am not that well built and practically none treating. Even though the situation is a result of a wrong opinion of seeing black people as a mugger, thieves I can’t help smiling by looking at others reaction towards.

Black Vs Blue (Tension between the Black community and police)

Laws are placed on the people because it is a way to control society. Police departments and officers are also a way to keep society in check and under control. For many years know police has been helping communities be safe; but we can help notice the tension between the Black citizens and the police. This tension has been apparent since the since police has been set to protect both Black populated areas and white populated areas.
Meta Carstarphen in Black vs. Blue: describes some of the reason why there is such a tension and dislike against the people who are trying to protect the community. Causes like mistrust among black because of frustrating experience from the police. Examples like more blacks being arrested for minor offences, Also the idea in blacks that most white controlled organizations as a racist or a white power.
This tension is still apparent between the two communities. More unnecessary incidents occur between the two communities. Many Blacks show their frustration on their musical lyrics, comedy and poems. I think the best way to solve the situation is by implementing community oriented policing that is described on the essay by Carstarphen. In my opinion gives the community a chance to get to know the police who are trying to protect them and ideas of racism will minimize because of the close interaction.

Hut Building in Kikuyu Culture

Jomo Kenyatta describes how the kikuyu built there hut’s. In the kikuyu culture having a hut is considered as a great accomplishment. The process of building these huts also hold numerous rituals, values and cultures within them. The kikuyu are not able to built houses for their family because of the high tax that is imposed by the British government. The high tax led to the minimization of hut building and less cultural rituals and process that happens during the hut building therefore results in the loss of culture and ritual.
The kikuyu’s experience is one example of how Europeans and Americans are influencing others culture. Even though some of the culture they impose could essentially benefit it does have some negative influence. In the recent decade the term “globalization” is something we here often. Globalization is a way that rich and developed countries go into smaller town and start business and development. This is leading to many cultural diffusion and most cultures will be forgotten or sometimes completely lost. In the case of the Kikuyu higher taxes lead to less development but also contribute to the loss of cultural values it hold during the hut building.

Meaning of Being Black in America

On the essay by William Raspberry; The Handicap of Definition he discusses the meaning of blackness in America, and how the people are define by their color. His thesis which states as “one of the heaviest burdens black Americans- and black children in particular- have to bear is the handicap of the definition: the question of what it means to be black.” He elaborates his thesis by giving examples of how Black children are thought that the only success a black person can have is as an athlete. He also details some other misconceptions like an Asian person is the only race with is capable of understanding mathematics. He argues that it is a very misleading definition of what it means to be black or any other race for that matter.
I agree with Williams’s thesis and explanations. Because the fact is that our goals and aspiration are limited by this issue. It may be true that blacks succeed in the athletics department or the Asian students doing well in math the bottom line is no one is bore with this abilities and are just limitations set to deter people from what they can actually do. Recent example could be the election of the first Black president which shows how much blacks are capable of performing other career than basketball and football. This applies to the entire race that is out in the world. People should not set their goals short because of such limitations.
